Does the lighter face mask mean lower protection? The introduction of GSM in nonwoven fabrics
Are you concerned that the lightness of face masks likely affects a certain level of protection? In this article, MAG will introduce the lightness and thickness of face masks and the connection to GSM.
What is the GSM of nonwoven fabrics?
The GSM of nonwoven fabrics refers to the weight of nonwoven fabrics after being accurately cut and measured. Generally, the majority of medical face masks consist of 25 GSM nonwoven fabrics and the melt-blown nonwoven fabric in the middle layer is approximately 20 or 25 GSM on the market. The nonwoven fabric with higher GSM has a higher color saturation and is stiffer. On the contrary, the nonwoven fabric with lower GSM is softer.
According to the production needs, the manufacturers can locate the GSM of nonwoven fabrics differently.
The connection between lightness, thickness and protection
Firstly, comprehending that a face mask is formed of a three-layer nonwoven fabric is essential. Secondly, the spun-bond nonwoven fabrics are waterproof and skin-friendly for the inner and outer layers separately and the melt-blown nonwoven fabric as the middle layer plays a key role in filtration and protection.
The more layers, the better? Certification does matter!
There are numerous face masks without certifications, and the more layers do not equal more protection. If each layer of nonwoven fabrics fails to reach the requested PFE and BFE, the mask is unable to protect against COVID-19 effectively. Therefore, choosing face masks with the domestic medical standard, such as double embossments (Made In Taiwan and MD), seems wise and ideal.
MAG is a trusted and the first supplier producing the full mask materials in Taiwan. Our best-sellers are spun-bond nonwoven fabrics (hydrophobic and hydrophilic), melt-blown nonwoven fabrics and HEPA grade melt-blown nonwoven fabrics featuring lower air resistance and higher filtration efficiency, plastic wires, nylon earloops and face shields.
